I really do not think that the title needs a posting but I am also accutely aware that it would be short sighted of me not to at least provide a brief explanation in three pragmatic bullet points.
- A hashtag or # symbol, is used to mark keywords or topics in a tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorise messages and can appear anywhere within a tweet.
- If you tweet with a hashtag on a public account, anyone can search for that hashtag or, by clicking on a hashtagged word within a tweet, show ALL tweets with that hashtag.
- Hereby it is possible to either ‘listen in’ or contribute to a #hashtagged or categorised conversation or stream.
Hashtag chats have been popular for some time now, for example #edchat or more subject focused chats such as #engchat, ictcurric or even #DLchat and Ross McGill (@TeacherToolkit) has added #SLTchat to the list.
