Adding Struggle to Learning

I am very proud of myself this morning. After 6 days of perservence, forum reading and trial and error learning, I finally managed to get a new experimental Delicious  (online bookmarking) feature to work – blog posting. Basically information stored in your Delicious account is auto-posted to your blog at a set time. Only I don’t think that this feature is that ‘new’ considering Ewan McIntosh  has ‘Delicious Links’ as far back 2006!

This experimental feature creates a daily post of your latest bookmarks to your blog.

When I logged in 10 minutes ago and saw the automated post, a shallow smile of pride sneaked across my face. It is not that the feature itself is that impressive but the learning I did to get it to work. Delicious requires some ket information but offers minimal instructions for us WordPress beginners. The issue for me was finding the solution to 2 of the  questions.

  • out_url is the full URL of the XML-RPC interface for your blog
  • The solution – simply adding xmlrpc.php to the end of the URL. – eg http://kristianstill.co.uk/wordpress/xmlrpc.php

  • out_cat_id is optional: the category ID number in your blog where you’d like to put these posts
  • Finding the Category ID – another simple resolution. Look at the end of the URL, the category number is at the end.

Without question, the effort expired and struggle to get this simple tool to work certainly added a degree of satisfaction to the success. This is not the first time I have considered the value of adding struggle to the learning process and most certainly not the last time I will experience it, but certainly a timely reminder.
