Here I am, teaching in my 10th year and the students are still teaching me about what makes them tick. Thursday’s lesson always starts with Wordplay. Each week I create 10 Moodle flashcards to help students practice their spellings. Students simply click the sentence to reveal the answer, self grading their progress.
Then on Thursday’s, we test the class with good old pen and paper, peer mark (tick and dot) and submit the grades to Moodle using an ‘Offline Activity’ Moodle Assignment. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
Moodle Flashcards are very simple in practice and yet offers heaps of information about the students memorisation process.
There is plenty more I could tell you about this module, (media options, deck options) but isn’t that what Moodle.org is for? In my experience, practitioners need educational value and reassurance. Moodle Flashcards work. I can almost predict the students spelling test score from their flashcard score and second, they are very easy to use, but there is plenty to explore.
Today students set the criteria for gaining a merit point. 3 consecutive improvements or 3 consecutive 10/10s. Easy to spot in the Moodle Gradebook – category Wordplay. What did the students teach me today, progress was as important and excellence. IMHO a timely reminder.
