A teacher (at least I think it was a teacher) posted a photo of an AFL poster on Twitter. You ‘like’ it, so you save it, store it, bookmark it, tag or flag it. Sadly, far too often one’s cup over floweth with good ideas and opportunity goes begging in a sea of shinny good teaching ideas. Not this time.
I liked the original but wanted a cleaner look. Mark II. I liked the terms, although accept that they may be a little challenging for some learners. You may like this version, (I hope you do) but I also wanted to gather whole class feedback as to their learning position. I could ask each group to identify themselves, or verbally report back, however that would slow the feedback process down. Bring on Caesar.
Mark III, I like it, but its not quite right. ‘Thumbs down’ to being a novice? Not really the message I want to promote. After all, it’s okay to be a novice, to be stuck, to fail (first attempt in learning). It is just a question of time and effort but as you see, I was running thumb positions. The solution – two thumbs up.
Now I need to find the original tweeter and return the poster to the owner. Can you help me?

I did exactly the same as you, but haven’t used any related images. (http://tinyurl.com/napeassess) When I say ‘I’, I actually mean a really good graphic designer we have in school. I am now looking at making this the framework for open badges in school and I am getting some badges mocked up to see what they look like. The difficult bit is creating rubrics for the four different levels.
The rubric – that’s challenging. For me, ensuring ‘Novice’ is not presented in a disparaging frame with expert exonerated from progress.
Loving this badge Kristian. I’ve implemented you L/O method in my classrooms, and spreading it across my school with some success. I have taught with rubrics much of this year in the same way. Hope to use this poster too – do you have a high-res version of it you might be able to share?
Have converted all the AFs and KS4 AQA criteria into ready-made rubrics (that require some minor editing to suit task and class). Should post them up on my blog at some point soon, especially if you’re interested.
