This week I lead our lesson observation and data training. Two eighty minute session, the first based on the ASCL lesson observation training materials and 4Matrix, the second the inner workings of 4Matrix and lesson observations.
Our staff were very perceptive in their observations, setting and expecting very high standards when observing the lesson. They found the modelled feedback given very supportive and professional, although some what humourous, as the class was certainly not ‘lively and challenging’ given our experiences. The new form was well received and it had in fact been used by a colleague that day. His confirmation and positive support was fortuitous .
The following day 4Matrix was introduced and passed the James Greenwood data test (meaning it was accurate and matched his rigorous data recording standards) and I believe it provided the staff with their first whole school, reliable, data investigation tool. Combining the lesson observations, with a data backdrop (plus a range of other data points), will enable us to monitor students achievement and teaching standards; intervene with either or both where necessary.
I suppose the real test of training is its perceived value. At the request of staff we, (Senior Heads of Curriculum) will be running the lesson observations training out through Curriculum meetings. As for 4MAtrix, I think that is a slow burner and will be used more functionally, first by curriculum leaders, and then class teachers when shared through lesson observations.
The more – I shared the John Goddard bucket list with a business class reviewing personal goal setting, Animoto.com for CCF videos, more Triptico converts across the board and sign a short term deal with SAMLearning for our Y11 students. Thursday and Friday I spent seeding the SAMLearning accounts and setting up mini competitions. Watch this space.
