Humility in Leadership

BlkBeltHumilityDan Rockwell regularly posts leadership mediasnacks. Although not specifically education focused, you will need to select what marries to your style and philosophy. I have found both reassurance and interesting ideas in his musings.

How to be a powerful humble leader

Stand your ground where values are concerned. Humble leaders submit to noble values.
What my previous Principal might have described as the “non-negotiables.” Consistently ‘Good’ teaching with ‘Outstanding’ capacity. (I am a realist of Tom Bennett mould. Outstanding lessons, every lesson would be almost superhuman).

Realise you aren’t your title.
When asked who you are, do you include your job title in your reply? Not to students, sometimes in professional circles. My profile does note that I am a VP at The Wellington Academy, after the fact that I am a father and husband.

Demand excellence from yourself, first.
I believe I do. I’ll let others answer that statement /question.

Call for, and enable excellence. (Emphasis on enable.)
Again, I hope I do.

Don’t believe your own press. People aren’t telling you the full truth.
Not sure that really matters in education. Does?

Serve.
Leaders at the front soon tire and this connects to the next point. There are also some strong references to servitude in the Challenge and Inspire writings page.

Sit at the side not the head.

Brag about others. Fools make others feel they don’t matter.

Say thanks. Gratitude softens arrogance.
Next term I wish to borrow an idea. Nominate a colleague. The nominations get shared, a small token of thanks offered to the winners. Release discretionary effort.

Invite feedback.
For each interview I attend, I ask my current lines and classes to write a short reference about me as a leader. Interesting reading if nothing else. I do believe you need to know yourself.

Ask as well as tell. Curiosity reflects humility. (Warning: questions may be control-tools.)
I think I could do a better job here.

Do the opposite of the arrogant leader list
Well, it would only be far to redirect you back to Dan Rockwell’s original post for that information.
