Talking about teaching

I meet with curriculum leaders at The Wellington Academy for the first official time this Wednesday and I am considering how that conversation will be formed, directed and developed.

In my mind, it will be two parts listening, two parts learning and teaching, one part managing progression and achievement.

The first two parts, is my opportunity to hear about their experiences as leaders, their aspirations, their teams, their ideas and their frustrations.

The next two parts discussing learning and teaching; OFSTED, the new generic subject descriptors, and of course inspections. How might they respond to the comments…

25. The key objective of lesson observations is to evaluate the quality of teaching and its contribution to learning, particularly in the core subjects. Inspectors will not look for a preferred methodology but must identify ways in which teaching and learning can be improved…

…111. Inspectors must not expect teaching staff to teach in any specific way or follow a prescribed methodology…

…Not all aspects of learning, for example pupils’ engagement, interest, concentration, determination, resilience and independence, will be seen in a single observation.

Finally achievement and progress. How did the department perform last year, how do they expect them to perform this year.

I think that’s plenty planned.
