Playful Learning with Ollie Bray

Ollie Bray, delayed by my offer of a lift to TVP, is now presenting. I can’t believe what all the fuss was about, we arrived just in time.

Why Games

Let’s change our argument. It’s not about games at all. It is about good learning. After all, don’t we as teachers, want challenge, progression and reward and is this not one of the key strengths of games? Add to that personalisation and real-time feedback can games learning, direct or guerrilla, be ignored. Games are a wonderful opportunity to create a contextual hub, driving up standards in literacy, numeracy and more.

WALLE is not just about recycling. It’s about relationships, robotics, values,  literacy and all the data that is generated by the game can be used to inform learning.

One reflection that screams out of Ollie’s presentation is that learning through games is multi discipline opportunity. Perhaps as Secondary schools we have something to learn from our Primary colleagues at how ‘multi-subject learning’ can be more effectively applied. How do we offer this type of learning more frequently instead of the big events, as with our annual STEM day at Hamble College. Which, incidentally, is one the my most memorable days, as a teacher at Hamble College.

Kodu, Ribbon Hero and Mouse Mischief also received honourable mentions, the FREE moniker always attractive, but it was the potential of MS KINECT that stole the show.

Ray Chambers (@Lanky_Boi_Ray KINECT), Nicki Maddams (@GeekyNicki Kodu), all talented educators worth connecting with and following.

I will also say, both went forward to the European Microsoft Innovative Teacher Awards, and watch out the worlds.
