I-Love-Teaching-EnglishLearning to be a… better English teacher. This is, and will continue to be, an on-going task.

In getting ready for starting at The Wellington Academy, I found some scribbled notes and a post it. The notes were from a CPD session using the ASCL lesson observation DVDs. The post it note, well that could have come from almost anywhere.

The garbled notes presented TEPE as an alternative to PEE paragraphs. It also talks of word explosions and a few additions to my AFOREST acronym. Both have since been roadtested in my classrooms.

One way that the writer uses language to describe in this section is ……………….Another way the writer uses language to describe is …………… The author’s use of language / words / tone of voice is significant in creating description. The author uses setting to convey … The characterisation of … is developed in this section.

We can see this in the quotation … We hear the scene described as … This is shown in the line “………………….”Arguably, the most significant line is …………….

P

The author seems to be suggesting … The author is, perhaps, exploring  the idea   of …The author is explaining, illustrating, uncovering, hiding, illuminating,   developing, The author is creating a child’s point of view by….

E

The words suggest / imply / convey … This   word / phrase / image / character makes me think of … This conveys feelings of … The word / image contains several ideas.    For example … The author seems to be exploring the theme / idea of … Developing   the interpretation further, we could argue that…

A FOREST with my KS4 class has been extended to anadiplosis/alliteration/adjectives, facts/flattery, opinion, repetition, rhetorical question, emotive language or expert testimony, statistics/superlatives, triples or triadic clusters, talk to the reader.

Tip top and learner bookmarks were on the post it note.  ‘Tip Top’ is a reminder for paragraph changes ‘time, topic, person and place.’ Learner bookmarks, are  ‘punctuation / connective cards or bookmarks’ to support lower ability learners in lessons. Simple.
