I am a big fan of Classdojo – it is my goto behaviour management tool but that doesn’t restrain my magpie tendencies when good ideas cross my eye-line. Two colleagues were talking ‘business studies’ and how to encourage students to get involved. The solution, create your own funny money and reward students for positive behaviours. As the idea bounced between them I knocked some currency with their outlook staff picture and a rupee clipart note. A week later I hear that the simple purchase option has been upgraded with a more strategic, business task, the auction. To summarise; student does good, they gets the dosh. At the end of term students get to spend their acquired wealth. Feedback suggests that the students are loving it, and yet their still have no idea of the true value of their funny money. See, another low tech teacher tool.
Following the post, I’ve been having a Twitter conversation about the association of money as a reward. The first point to note is that the auction is a bunch of random prizes from baked beans, an ‘I love geography pencil’ and other random and curious items.
It is the association of currency with business studies that is the focus. In reflection it is also a little ironic, that our schools merit system, also a currency, is then converted to iTunes vouchers. It is certainly a topic worthy of further debate.
