Extrality is working on augmented reality flashcards for phonics, something they are branding SmashCards. Simply, when a SmashCard is held up to a webcam, relevant graphics or videos pop up on the computer screen as shown here.

What I really liked, was that SmashCards can be combined and determine what order they are present in. For example, correctly spelling TEA was rewarded with a video of tea being poured.
What comes after flashcards? Well, interactive stories and activities but I am sure that there are many more ideas at the design table. Keep up to date with their blog.
