Learning, Fun, Edugaming?

Today I explored Moodle’s Games Module, at the end of the post I wanted a word that both describe ‘fun’ and ‘learning.’ A word to describe the process of edugaming (not that edugaming is a real work either) afforded by such activities, as far as I know, there isn’t one? So I am hoping to define the concept, if it has not been defined already?

A concept where learning is the primary aim, achieved when having fun or edugaming?

Flearning? Funearning? Learfun? Flun? What about French? LeFearn?  Learfunning? Learning with fun in the middle? Please Help!

It reminded me of the Piano Stairs, experiment. An experiment to see if it was possible to get more people to take the stairs rather than the escalator by making it more fun to do so?

Can we add more flun?? to learning / teaching and attain our learning outcomes. That is, to not simply accept students having fun, for good learning / teaching. Hmmm… have I found the focus on my edugaming enquiries…. possibly.

  1. I quite like ‘flearning’….

The tricky part about trying to name this, or even identifying the learning that may or may not be taking place is the stigma attached to educational games..

Well aware that learning can take place in all sorts of situations- if we identify it is happening to the students will that have a positive impact?

      Flearning it is.

Yes, the educational stigma is there and I am not 100% sure why? The connotations of gaming as a teenage distraction and limited, positive, exposure of many educationalist to gaming perhaps two key blockages?

I don’t wish to only use edugames and inspirating of impetus for learning, I am hoping to explore gaming that is learning (a side step away from the post I know).

I am looking and exploring a few examples at the moment, http://www.thecurfewgame.com/ and http://www.smokescreengame.com/ both currently blocked at Hamble College. Atmosphir is another game in our sights, also unavailable.

Identification of learning…. I suppose I am looking at how ‘fun’ can be exploited as a motivator with learning the by-product of that experience. The identification is perhaps a requirement of education practice rather than my personal philosophy. Did that address your question Tim?
